Campaigning Spokes campaigns in a variety of ways to get better provision for cyclists in South West Hertfordshire.

Most work is done with the three local district councils – Watford, Three Rivers and Hertsmere.  Both Watford and Three Rivers now have regular “cycling forums” open to any local cyclists, where we can see the plans for cycle provision and traffic management and influence what happens.  Hertsmere’s work for cyclists is primarily through a Greenways initiative, improving bridleways off road.  We also contribute to consultations on district plans and strategies.

We go to as many local fairs and events as possible, with our displays of Spokes’ work, and supplies of leaflets, cycle gear, maps, etc. The people helping are usually the same handful of stalwarts so we would welcome new faces. 

We focus a lot of activity on the annual Bike Week in June, including offering rides for beginners and people thinking of getting back on their bikes.  (Our rides programme throughout the year includes rides for the less confident.)

We feel frustrated that we can’t get more done more quickly, but we keep trying!  We always need more help.
