10 riders assembled at Watford Met station for a circular ride taking in the very first Chorleywood Apple Day. The route was based on Ride 11 in the blue book, just diverging around Chorleywood to enable us to drop in at the Chorleywood House Estate where the Apple Day event was taking place. This was some 5 miles into the ride, a suitable distance for a break for a glass of apple juice. We parked our bikes and walked over to the summer house where we saw a display of different varieties of apples some of which were for sale. On another stall people were trying out a fancy type of apple peeler/chopper and next door apples were being pressed into juice, you couldn't ask for fresher than that! It was quite a small event, but ideal to drop into from our ride. The apples had been provided by local growers as the estate's orchard has only just been planted.
Soon we were on our way again as it was a further 8 miles until lunch. We rode through Chorleywood (and up the other side) then on past Little Chalfont, Chenies and the watercross beds to Belsize. We stopped for lunch at The Plough, where several of us went for the watercress soup. After lunch it was just an easy stretch of 5 miles back to Watford via Chandlers Cross and Rousebarn Lane. Maybe next year we'll be able to return to taste apples from the newly planted orchard itself.
